3. Miradouro da Senhora do Monte

The highest point on this list, with an almost 360-degree view over the castle, the city and the river. It is also one of the least crowded, partly because the climb is a proper calf workout. There is usually a food truck and a busker, and it always rewards the effort.

4. Miradouro de Santa Catarina

The west-facing classic, with pines framing the Tagus and the 25 de Abril Bridge. It has a kiosk, a wall that is the social hub of the place, and a young, bohemian mood. It is one of the busiest, especially in summer, so arrive early for a wall seat. It is a short walk from the Bica funicular and the Time Out Market.

5. Ribeira das Naus

For anyone who prefers watching the sunset at water level, without climbing hills. The riverside steps between Cais do Sodré and Terreiro do Paço are the most relaxed and genuinely local spot on the list. Bring something to drink and sit on the steps as the light shifts over the Tagus.

6. Jardim do Torel

A walled garden, calmer and often almost empty, high on a slope with a view over Baixa and beyond the river. It is the choice for anyone who wants the sunset without the crowd or the kiosk, in a quieter, tree-lined setting.

7. Park, a Bairro Alto rooftop

The rooftop built on top of a car park has become one of the city's best-known spots, and for good reason: it faces west, catches the bridge in the distance and serves cocktails as the sun goes down. It is the option for anyone who wants to pair the sunset with a well-made drink.

8. Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara

The most visited in the city, and here comes the honesty: it faces east, so the sun does not set in front of you. Even so, in the late afternoon the golden light lights up the castle across the valley, and the atmosphere, especially on the upper terrace, is one of the liveliest in Lisbon. 9. Miradouro das Portas do Sol and Santa Luzia

Two magnificent balconies over Alfama, the rooftops and the Tagus, with tiles and a very pleasant terrace.
